The Kolkata Race Course in Kolkata, West Bengal is one of the largest and best horse racing grounds in India. The race course is maintained by the Royal Calcutta Turf Club and is a must visit destination for people visiting Kolkata. Here, visitors get the taste of elite and royal side of the city. There is also a huge polo ground just adjacent to the race course which is considered to be the best in the country.

The race course is located in the south-west part of Maidan and the Victoria memorial lies in western corner of the race course.

History of Kolkata Race Course

While Calcutta served as the seat of British empire till 1911, the city gained its privilege of housing several destinations of amusements for art and sports. Kolkata race course was built with the intention to promote horse riding and is one of the largest race courses in the country.

The Kolkata Race Course was established in 1820 for the elites to gather for amusements and sports. Being only accessible to its members, the race course was opened for public viewing in 1880 and public viewing stands were built. The race course is famous for some of the most prestigious racing events that have been held here.

The Royal Calcutta Turf Club was built or rather is a result of conversion of a house that belonged to the erstwhile Apcar Family, a prominent Armenian merchant family who had originally immigrated to India from Persia during the late 1770s. The club building is a double storey Palladian style structure with marble floorings and teakwood doors with wooden staircase.

The Derby Season in Kolkata Race Course

The horse racing sport is seasonal and happens twice a year. The season begins in July and stretches till September whereas the second season starts from November and extends till March. The races are organized on every Saturdays of these months.

Huge number of spectators from across the country throng to Kolkata during the seasonal matches. Public holidays and special occasions also add up to being days when horse races are organized.

During the off season, polo matches are organized by the Royal Calcutta Turf Club. The race course also has a beautifully manicured lawn and gardens and is well maintained by RCTC.

How to Reach Kolkata Race Course

The nearest metro station is Rabindra Sadan Metro Station. The Royal Calcutta Turf Club is around 1 km from the metro station and can be reached by walking.

Alternatively, one may also hire cab from top car rental companies in Kolkata to reach the turf club from any part of the city.

Both Sealdah and Howrah junctions are nearest train stations. One may hire a cab from either of the places to reach the race course.

Local buses also ply from both Sealdah and Howrah. Board a bus that goes towards Rabindra Sadan.
