It was 60 years ago, in the year 1961 that one of the oldest cultural hubs of India sprouted in Kolkata, which would become the most iconic stages of performing arts in the country. The auditorium which is located near Nandan Cinema on the Belvedere Road, was named Rabindra Sadan, in honour of Kolkata’s very own literature icon and Nobel laureate, Rabindranath Tagore.
History of Rabindra Sadan, Kolkata
The auditorium was inaugurated by the then Prime Minister of India, Pandit Jawahar Lal Nehru. The center has been the hub and principal venue for Kolkata Film Festival. What started as a single stage auditorium has now extended to becoming a full-fledged cultural complex centre with various other theatres and stages.
The cultural complex was established in 1967 and comprises Nandan, Pashcimabanga Bangla Akademi (West Bengal Bengali Academy) and Ganganendra Pradarshanshala. Besides, Sisir Mancha, Academy of Fine Arts and The Calcutta Information Centre are also a part of the complex thereby making the complex a favourite cultural adda or hub for culture lovers and artists.
The visitors of Rabindra Sadan include people from all over the globe who come here to witness the vibrant tradition and cultural traits, dance, drama, theatre, and other art and photography exhibitions that are regularly held. The centre was renovated in 2016 after being ignored for quite a while.
Features of Rabindra Sadan, Kolkata
1. Nandan
Nandan centre at the cultural complex is majorly film and cultural centre that facilitates awareness towards cinema and is one of the main venues of Kolkata International Film Festival, making it a hub for artists all over the city, both young and old.
The foundation stone of Nandan was laid by the then Chief Minister, Jyoti Basu in 1980 and the inauguration was done by one of the greatest cinematic artists of all time, Satyajit Ray on 2nd September 1985.
Being the cultural hub of Kolkata, special programmes and memorial lectures are held in Nandan in addition to the Social Communication Film Festival which is organised in collaboration with Roopkala Kendra.
The managing committee of Nanda is headed by Sandip Ray, a film director associated with Bengali Cinema and its members include Aparna Sen, Prabhat Roy and Ranjit Mallick to name a few.
2. Paschimbanga Bangla Akademi
Being founded in 1986, the Paschimbanga Bangla Akademi is the official regulatory body of Bengali language in West Bengal that promotes the Bengali culture and language in the state. The academy is modelled after Bangla Academy of Bangladesh and Académie française of France.
Even without having any enforcement power, the rules and regulations of the Akademi is widely accepted by the Governments of West Bengal and Tripura. Couple of private institutions and publishing houses which accept the rules of the Akademi are the Oxford University Press and Ramakrishna Mission.
3. Sisir Mancha
Located just adjacent to the Rabindra Sadan- Nandan complex is the Sisir Mancha, the auditorium which is majorly used for theatre performances. The auditorium was established in 1978 and is named after famous Bengali drama personality, Sisir Kumar Bhaduri.
Timings and Entry Fees of Rabindra Sadan, Kolkata
The timings of Rabindra Sadan are from 10 am to 9 pm from Monday to Saturday. On Sundays, it is open from 10 am to 2 pm.
The entry fee depends on the shows inside the cultural complex.
